Cornell women’s soccer was 85 seconds away from extending its scoreless streak to a program-record third consecutive match before Army found the breakthrough Thursday night, handing the Big Red a 1-0 loss at Malek Stadium at Clinton Field.
Cornell, which fell to 2-3-2, controlled much of the second half and generated several quality chances but could not find the finishing touch. Army improved to 3-6-0 and snapped a four-match losing streak with the late goal.
Sophia Henry scored the deciding goal with 1:25 remaining in regulation after Army sent a long ball into the penalty area. Cornell was unable to clear the loose ball, allowing Henry to collect it and finish from inside the box. The goal was upheld following video review.
The late breakthrough ended Cornell’s 292-minute, 15-second shutout streak and extended its scoreless stretch to 348 minutes, 1 second.
Cornell’s best opportunities came after halftime. The Big Red outshot Army 11-6 in the second half and held a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal during that span. Army goalkeeper Karalyn Dail was responsible for much of the difference, making five of her six saves after halftime.
Dail denied Raya Leikin in the 52nd minute before stopping Brooke Brown and Andrea Wilson during a dangerous stretch in the 63rd minute. She also turned away attempts from Alanna Colbert and Wilson later in the half.
Cornell finished with a 15-11 advantage in total shots and put six attempts on target compared with four for Army. Colbert led the Big Red with six shots, while Emily Gibbons added three. Wilson put both of her attempts on goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Sofia Kerrigan made three saves for Cornell.
Cornell will finish its four-match road trip Sunday against Binghamton. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Bearcats Sports Complex in Vestal.
