Yankees take down Astros in series opener

The New York Yankees (57-52) opened a four-game series with the Houston Astros (62-48) Thursday night at Yankee Stadium and picked up a 4-3 victory.

Giancarlo Stanton and Billy McKinney hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning, and Anthony Volpe drove in the winning run with a two-out single in the sixth.

Clarke Schmidt allowed two runs on four hits over five innings while walking one and striking out four. Wandy Peralta allowed a game-tying solo home run, but Michael King, Tommy Kahnle, and Clay Holmes posted scoreless appearances to help secure the win.

The Yankees will send Luis Severino to the mound on Friday at 7:05 p.m. as they look to take the first two games.
