Lawmakers call for ‘speed limiters’ on repeat speeding offenders in New York

State lawmakers have introduced legislation that would require repeat speeders in New York to install “speed limiters” in their vehicles.

According to the proposed bill, drivers who accumulate six speeding tickets and/or red-light camera violations, or four speed camera or red-light violations in a year, or 11 or more points on their license in 18 months, would be required to install the device.

This technology ensures that the driver cannot exceed the speed limit by more than five miles per hour, with the possibility of extending the installation for up to 36 months.

The lawmakers described the proposal as a response to a significant public safety issue, citing statistics that speed contributes to one-third of all traffic fatalities and that every 10 mph increase in speed doubles the risk of death. They further noted that speed limiters have been proven to reduce traffic deaths by 37%.
