Who is eligible?
Houston, Texas mayor announced last week that they would be launching a guaranteed income pilot program, and applications opened that day. Read more about it here.
The city of Houston is working with Houston Fund for Social Justice and Economic Equity to get the payments out. The program is also in partnership with Mayors for Guaranteed Income.
In order to qualify, you must be experiencing economic hardship. The other requirements are:
- a resident of Houston, Texas
- at least 18 when you apply
- have a household income at or below the federal poverty level
110 people will be selected to get monthly payments of $375 for one year.
You can apply online, but you will need to do it soon. Applications close on Wednesday, May 25 at 11.59pm CT. Applications are available in English, Spanish, Mandarin and Vietnamese.
Houston’s mayor wants the money to go to people in neighborhoods that have previously been underserved. The program will target residents who have dealt with homelessness, been involved with the justice system or have health concerns.
