A new UBI program is starting next month that would give caregivers like parents an extra $450 per month in the city of Ithaca, New York.
The payments will go out to 110 Ithaca residents for 12 months.
The program is privately funded and will help low income caregivers pay for things like medical care, food, and housing.
Who qualifies for the UBI program?
Those who can qualify must have already applied between Dec. 10 and Dec. 17 of 2021.
The participants were chosen in January out of the 400-600 applications submitted.
The biggest requirement is you must be a caregiver living in Ithaca, New York.
Some could see $350 payments for 10 months, who’s eligible?
Your 2021 income needs to be below 80% of the area’s median income level to qualify for the UBI payments.
The definition for a caregiver according to the city, is an adult that gives a significant amount of unpaid time to caring for a child.
It can be inside or outside of the home.
Other eligible caregivers may be those who care for their parents or disabled individuals.
The payments for the UBI program should have started going out but were delayed.
They will begin in June and go out as prepaid debit cards.
