It was a relatively quick trip from the soccer pitch to a network TV broadcast booth for a Hobart graduate.
Tyler Terens made his national television debut on Saturday’s New England-Inter Miami MLS match on ESPN.
Terens was a three-year starter on defense for the Statesmen before graduating in 2016. He was twice named to the Liberty League All-Academic team and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. After his senior season, Terens walked into campus stations WEOS and WHWS and inquired about sportscasting opportunities. He did color commentary for Hobart and William Smith sports for the remainder of his senior year, then quickly found work with a number of broadcast outlets after graduation.
He was then hired by VISTA Worldlink, a company that holds streaming rights for several soccer leagues. Terens called games remotely, describing the action while watching on a monitor from the company’s Miami headquarters. While at VISTA Worldlink, he caught the eye and ear of former US National team goalkeeper Tony Meola, who did color commentary for the Chicago Fire of MLS. Meola recommended him to Fire ownership. He called one game for the Fire before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down MLS in 2020. He returned to cover Fire games in 2021.
Terens’ next ESPN assignment will be the Fire vs. Minnesota United match on April 23.
