The basic income pilot program is giving up to $1,500 a month to struggling families in California.
This is set to start within the next few weeks.
Who is eligible?
Families who have at least one child under the age of six and households who are already receiving aid through CalWORKs ( the state’s public assistance program for families). The selected families will be guaranteed income payments as well as the assistance they were already receiving. Find more information here.
The bulk of initial funding came from cannabis tax revenue.
When and how will I get it?
On April 1st, prepaid debit cards will be sent out to the participating families.
Through the CalWORKs assistance program, a family of four could receive up to $15,000 each year. The Big Leap program in Los Angeles is giving monthly payments of $1,000. Sacramento County is also providing up to $1,500 in hazard pay to essential workers who worked during the pandemic. The state of California is also still issuing stimulus checks up to $1,200 to eligible residents.
The state of California wants to boost these lower income families above the poverty line. That is roughly $25,000 for a family of four. Having all of these assistance programs are a great resource for families who need them.
