Former Watkins Glen cop indicted for perjury, official misconduct a second time

Former Watkins Glen Sgt. in Charge Brandon Matthews has been indicted.

Again.

The latest indictment comes after the last one was thrown out. He was arrested on December 3 following an investigation by the Yates County District Attorney’s Office and Special Prosecutor Todd Casella, from Yates County.

A technicality resulted in the charges being dismissed, since he was not able to testify on his own behalf. However, a new grand jury was convened and on Friday, December 17 and Matthews was given the opportunity to testify.

The new indictment charges Matthews with eight counts of perjury, a felony, as well as one count of misdemeanor official misconduct. He’s accused of perjuring himself concerning a state police investigation. That investigation involved the discovery of marijuana on Matthews property in the town of Dix in 2020.

The official misconduct charge stems from Matthews, allegedly engaging in a pattern of ‘sleeping on the job while employed by the Watkins Glen Police Department’ for a total of eight years.
