Restaurants face another hurdle as Jan. 1 approaches, marking the date foam to-go containers are banned

Starting in 2022, some foam products will be a thing of the past.

Take out containers are made of a material that is going to be banned in New York State starting Jan. 1, 2022.

The ban is aimed at helping the environment, but it’s going to cost businesses more money as they find alternative ways to package their food.

Alternatives include packaging made of bamboo or paper products, and typically cost more than double what a Styrofoam container costs.

Polystyrene is a possible replacement product, but it isn’t recyclable and can cause issues if littered.

As of now, foam peanuts and foam used in packaging appliances or boxed products is not banned. The peanuts are made of different products that make them biodegradable. Foam trays that store meat is packaged in are also not subject to the ban.
