Forty-two percent of U.S. adults say they make no purchases with cash in a typical week, up from 24% in 2015, according to a new Pew Research Center survey.
Another 46% use cash sometimes, while 12% use it for all or nearly all purchases. Pew surveyed 9,750 adults from May 26 to June 1.
Cash use varies sharply by income. Fifty-eight percent of adults in households earning at least $100,000 go cashless in a typical week, compared with 24% of those earning less than $30,000.
Younger adults are also more likely to avoid cash: 51% of people under 30 reported no cash purchases, compared with 37% of adults ages 50 to 64.
Still, 46% of Americans said they carry cash always or most of the time. Pew found that 26% of frequent cash carriers do not use it for typical purchases.
