Penn Yan police are asking anyone with information about the 1973 disappearance of June Allison Streeter to contact the department as an Alabama cold-case group renews attention on the case.
Streeter, 41, was last known to be at a roadside rest stop on U.S. Route 431 near Wedowee, Alabama, on Oct. 8, 1973, while traveling from Florida to New York with her husband, Lawrence D. Streeter, and her two children from a previous marriage, according to a case summary from Alabama Cold Case Advocacy.
The summary says the children slept in the car while June Streeter, Lawrence Streeter and their two dogs stayed in a travel trailer. The following morning, Lawrence Streeter told the children that June had left during the night while he was asleep, according to the group.
The group said Lawrence Streeter reportedly refused to let the children enter the trailer, unhooked it from the vehicle, gave the children $10 and put them on a bus to their father's home in New York.
June Streeter's family said it was out of character for her to leave without contacting them, according to the summary. Her sister also reported that June was afraid of Lawrence and that he had threatened her with a pistol.
Lawrence Streeter was later arrested in Florida on an unrelated Georgia larceny warrant, the summary says. Police searched the travel trailer and found some of June's clothing and a .32-caliber pistol.
The summary says Lawrence maintained that June left during the night and never returned. He posted bond in the larceny case, and his whereabouts were unknown for a period afterward.
June Streeter was described as 5 feet, 1 inch to 5 feet, 2 inches tall and weighing 115 to 120 pounds, with blond hair and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing a pink tank top, beige or tan slacks, size 6 shoes, a gold ring with two diamonds and a size 5 ring with a black onyx stone.
