The fan favourite show has been given its moment in the spotlight by Netflix with the first look at the reboot of A Different World. On Hillman College fans will be back with a whole new crop of students and some familiar faces. The hit college sitcom is getting a new story and it will be released on September 24, 2026.
The spinoff is going to focus on the daughter of Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne, Deborah Wayne. Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon stars as Deborah, a young woman coming to Hillman College on her own path, weighed down by the expectations of one of the school’s most prestigious families.

The only good reason to reboot Different World is to bring back some of the original cast. Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison return as Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne from the original series.
These returning characters serve as a bridge between the original story of Hillman College and the new generation, providing a nostalgic link for longtime fans while also allowing the younger characters to find their own voice.

The reboot also features Debbie Allen, who was instrumental in shaping the original series. Allen also will executive produce and direct the series and will direct the first episode of the series.
Having her around will probably keep a link between the old sitcom and the new one. “A Different World” was known for pushing the boundaries of typical sitcom fare, into the world of college life, HBCU culture, friendships and social issues.

The original “A Different World” was one of the most memorable TV shows about life at a historically black college. Its education and community and student experiences gradually metamorphosed into a cultural following.
