Wooden canoe assembly returns to Keuka College July 14

Keuka College will host wooden canoe builders, collectors, paddlers and history enthusiasts from across North America next week when the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association brings its annual assembly back to Keuka Lake.

The 46th annual Wooden Canoe Heritage Association Assembly is scheduled for July 14 through 19, marking the fifth time the organization has held the gathering on Keuka Lake and its first return to the area since 2009.

The public is welcome at the event, which is expected to feature antique, classic and newly built wooden canoes, Adirondack guideboats and sailing canoes on the lake.

The gathering also will include live boat-building demonstrations, restoration workshops, educational seminars, family activities and a marketplace with handcrafted paddles, artwork, books, tools and boat-building supplies.

Organizers also plan a Saturday afternoon auction and raffle, along with opportunities for visitors to paddle historic watercraft during the assembly.

The event will include a Finger Lakes connection through a display of Penn Yan Boats organized with the Finger Lakes Boating Museum and boat owners. Penn Yan Boats became known for handcrafted wooden watercraft that helped shape recreational boating in the region.

The assembly coincides with another classic boating event in the area. The Hammondsport Finger Lakes Antique Boat Show is scheduled for July 18, giving visitors another opportunity to see historic and restored boats during the same week.

Organizers are also seeking donations from local businesses and community members for member gifts and the Saturday auction. Donation questions may be directed to Rob Stevens at robstevens7777@gmail.com.
