The New York Yankees snapped a two-game losing streak Monday with a 5-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field, trimming the gap in the American League East to three while improving to 50-40.
After dropping nine of their previous 10 games, New York leaned on a dominant outing from Cam Schlittler and a pair of home runs from José Caballero to open the four-game series on a winning note.
Schlittler rebounded from his shortest outing of the season by delivering one of his best starts in pinstripes. The right-hander limited Tampa Bay to one run on four hits over a season-high-tying eight innings, striking out eight while throwing 101 pitches. His effort kept the Yankees within striking distance before Caballero broke through in the fifth inning with a three-run homer to erase Griffin Jax’s no-hit bid and put New York ahead 3-1. Caballero struck again with a solo shot in the eighth, finishing 2-for-3 with four RBI and accounting for most of the Yankees’ offense.
Ben Rice added a solo homer in the ninth to provide insurance as New York’s only three hits all left the ballpark.
The series continues Tuesday, with first pitch scheduled for 6:40 p.m. Right-hander Will Warren (7-3, 3.73 ERA) is expected to start for the Yankees.
