Montezuma man charged after rifle found during probation visit

A Montezuma man was charged with criminal possession of a weapon after probation officers found a rifle during a home visit, according to the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Brian Schenck said deputies arrested Andrew R. Smith, 36, of Montezuma, at 11:29 a.m. June 30 on a charge of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class A misdemeanor.

Deputies were dispatched to an address in the town of Montezuma at 11:06 a.m. after Cayuga County Probation officers located a rifle in Smith’s home during a visit, according to the release.

Investigators determined Smith had prior felony convictions and was in possession of a rifle while under Cayuga County Probation supervision, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Smith was taken into custody and arraigned in centralized arraignment court. He was remanded pending $1,250 bail or $2,500 bond.
