FEMA has approved $7.1 million for disaster-recovery projects in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and Arizona, including emergency work tied to a typhoon and the COVID-19 pandemic.
The funding comes through FEMA's Public Assistance program, which reimburses states, local governments, tribes and territories for eligible costs associated with disaster response and recovery.
About $7 million will go to the Northern Mariana Islands for emergency protective measures taken because of Super Typhoon Sinlaku, according to the agency.
Arizona will receive more than $100,000 for emergency measures intended to reduce immediate threats to public health and safety during the COVID-19 pandemic.
FEMA said Public Assistance projects can cover repairs to critical infrastructure and public buildings, road work and reimbursement for costs incurred to protect public health and safety after a disaster.
The agency described the awards as part of broader federal recovery support for communities rebuilding after hurricanes, severe storms, tornadoes, wildfires and other disasters.
