Boston Weather Alert Heat Wave Could Push Temperatures to 100 Degrees This Week

Boston weather alert warnings increase with a dangerous heat wave possible as temperatures could reach near 100 degrees this week. The most dangerous conditions are expected from Thursday, July 2 through Friday, July 3. The hottest stretch is expected from Wednesday, July 1 through Saturday, July 4. Forecasts call for Boston to hit the mid-90s on Wednesday, then go to near 100 degrees on Thursday and Friday. The humidity will make it harder for the body to cool down, which may make the heat index feel even hotter. An Extreme Heat Warning is in place for Boston and much of southern New England, advising residents that heat-related illness risks will rise significantly. Timing is critical as well as the heat wave is expected to coincide with the July 4 holiday period when many people may be outdoors for events, travel and celebrations.

Boston to Feel the Heat This Week

Boston’s heat wave is forecast to ramp up quickly after a more comfortable day Tuesday. Temperatures are expected to reach the 90s Wednesday, Thursday could reach 99 degrees and Friday will be around 98 degrees. Saturday will stay very hot with highs still in the low 90s. The bigger concern is the heat index, which could make it feel like it was between 100 and 112 degrees at times. Nights will also be warm and muggy, especially in the city with the urban heat island effect that can keep temperatures from falling much. That means the body gets less natural cooling at night.

Why the Heat Alert Matters

The heat alert for Boston is serious. Prolonged heat and humidity can become dangerous, especially for people without reliable air conditioning. Heat illness can develop rapidly when the body is unable to cool itself. Older adults, young children, outdoor workers, athletes, people with chronic medical conditions and pets are at increased risk. The warning period also includes hot nights which can make the heat more stressful as homes and apartments may not cool down enough. A heat wave is not only the afternoon high temperature. It’s also about the length of the heat, the humidity, and whether people can get over it in one night.

4th of July Weekend Weather Concerns

The July 4 weekend may have a combination of heat and thunderstorms. Saturday should be hot with a chance of widespread thunderstorms later in the day. It could affect outdoor plans, fireworks viewing, travel, cookouts and public events around Boston. Those planning to go to outdoor gatherings should prepare for extreme heat and sudden storms. Reduce your risk by drinking water, taking shade breaks, wearing light-colored clothing and checking radar before you leave home. Organisers of outdoor events may need to have contingency plans in place in case storms bring downpours and gusty winds.
