A Throop man was arrested after deputies said he sold a dump trailer that had been lent to him and refused to return it.
Matthew P. Smith, 43, of Throop, was charged June 18 with misapplication of property, a misdemeanor, according to the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies said the case began April 2, when a deputy was sent to a residence for a larceny report. The victim told deputies that Smith had borrowed a dump trailer and was refusing to return it.
Investigators determined Smith had sold the trailer to another person, according to the sheriff's office. A warrant was then filed charging him with misapplication of property.
Smith was later located and taken into custody. He was arraigned through centralized arraignment and released on his own recognizance.
Smith is scheduled to appear in Throop Town Court at 6 p.m. July 21.
The sheriff's office said anyone with information can call 315-253-1222 or submit a tip through Cayuga County's tip line or SaferWatch app. Smith is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
