A new $5 million animal shelter opened its doors in Wayne County this week, according to the Finger Lakes Times. Community leaders and supporters gathered in Lyons to celebrate the Humane Society of Wayne County’s new facility, a project years in the making.
The 10,000-square-foot shelter replaces the organization’s original 1990 building and offers modern space for animal care, adoptions, and staff operations. The project received major support from private donors, including a $1.5 million gift from philanthropist Tom Golisano, along with county funding.
Speakers credited longtime Humane Society director Mark Plyter for leading the effort. Officials described the new shelter as a place of hope, while Plyter said the facility will serve as a community resource where animals in need can get a fresh start.
