Bo Bichette snapped out of a weeklong slump with a four-hit performance to lead the New York Mets to a 7-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday afternoon at T-Mobile Park. The win allowed New York (27-35) to avoid a series sweep while ending Seattle’s eight-game win streak as the Mariners fell to 33-20.
After Seattle grabbed a 1-0 lead on J.P. Crawford’s leadoff home run, the Mets responded immediately. An error by first baseman Josh Naylor helped New York tie the game in the first inning before the offense broke through with a four-run fourth.
MJ Melendez started the rally with a walk, and after Luis Torrens and Carson Benge singled, Bichette delivered a two-run single for his third hit of the afternoon. The Mets added another run on a perfectly executed double steal that allowed Benge to score from third, and Jared Young capped the inning with an RBI double that bounced off first base and into right field.
Bichette finished 4-for-4 with three RBI, recording his first four-hit game since joining New York and ending an 0-for-16 stretch. A.J. Ewing added the first three-hit game of his career as the Mets collected 14 hits.
Freddy Peralta recovered nicely after Crawford’s homer, allowing just one run over six innings. The right-hander worked around traffic throughout the day, struck out six and lowered his ERA to 3.38. Brooks Raley, Luke Weaver and Joey Gerber combined for three scoreless innings to finish off the win.
After an off day Thursday, the Mets will open a three-game series against the San Diego Padres on Friday at Petco Park. First pitch is scheduled for 9:40 p.m. Christian Scott (1-0, 2.97 ERA) is expected to start for New York against Michael King (4-4, 3.18 ERA).
