Mets capitalize on Yankees mistakes, even Subway Series

The New York Mets took advantage of wild pitching and timely hitting to defeat the New York Yankees 6-3 on Saturday night at Citi Field, evening the Subway Series at one game apiece. The Mets improved to 19-26 with the win, while the Yankees fell to 28-18 after leaving multiple scoring opportunities stranded late.

A chaotic third inning helped swing momentum toward the Mets. After Carson Benge doubled and both Bo Bichette and Juan Soto walked to load the bases, Yankees starter Carlos Rodón uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Benge to score. Rodón’s hurried throw home then skipped past catcher Austin Wells, bringing Bichette home to give New York a 2-1 lead.

Mark Vientos delivered the biggest offensive blow in the fifth. Following a Benge single and Soto walk, Vientos ripped a two-run double down the left field line to extend the Mets’ lead to 5-2. He later added an RBI groundout in the seventh and finished with three RBIs.

Benge continued his recent hot stretch at the top of the lineup, going 3-for-4 for his fourth multi-hit performance in five games despite a costly dropped fly ball in the seventh inning.

The Yankees threatened to turn the game around in that frame after loading the bases with nobody out against Brooks Raley. Luke Weaver entered and changed the game, striking out Amed Rosario and Trent Grisham before inducing an inning-ending groundout from Anthony Volpe on just 11 pitches.

The Mets used five pitchers in the victory, with Devin Williams securing the save.

Box Score

The Subway Series concludes Sunday at 1:40 p.m. at Citi Field. Freddy Peralta (3-3, 3.10 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Mets against Yankees rookie Elmer Rodriguez.
