Cayuga baseball captures second straight MSAC title ahead of postseason

Cayuga Community College baseball secured its second consecutive Mid-State Athletic Conference championship this spring after finishing 31-19 overall with a league-best 14-4 conference record. The Spartans edged Onondaga Community College for the title and claimed their fourth MSAC crown in the last five seasons.

Cayuga continued its offensive dominance throughout the season, tying a program record with 31 wins while also setting new single-season marks in runs scored (447), home runs (24), and on-base percentage (.472). The Spartans averaged nearly nine runs per game and featured one of the region’s deepest lineups.

Tyler Black led the offense with a .423 batting average and 63 RBI, while Chase Mascelli (.398), Jeremy Recio (.396) and Eathen Yoon (.393) all hit above .390. Recio paced the Spartans with six home runs, while leadoff hitter Jakson Ross scored 63 runs and posted a .516 on-base percentage. Five Cayuga hitters finished the regular season with OBPs above .500.

The Spartans also received strong contributions on the mound. Sophomore Dylan Gordon led the pitching staff with 40 2/3 innings pitched and 10 starts, while Jancarlos Rodriguez paced the team with six wins. Ashtyn Traugott-Knoll recorded a team-high 34 strikeouts, and reliever James MacLean led Cayuga with three saves across 19 appearances.

Cayuga finished third in Region III’s East Division with a 20-8 divisional record and now turns its attention toward postseason play.

The Spartans open the Region III playoffs Saturday, May 9, with a doubleheader against Erie Community College at noon. The best-of-three series will continue Sunday, if necessary, with the winner advancing to the Region III Final Four beginning Thursday, May 14, at Falcon Park.
