Cayuga Community College soccer secured its first victory of the season Wednesday, scoring twice in the final 15 minutes to pull away from Jefferson Community College for a 4-2 win at Falcon Park on Wednesday.
The Spartans improved to 1-1-1 overall and 1-1 in both Region III and the Mid-State Athletic Conference.
Cayuga struck first just six minutes into the match when defender Owen Steedman sent a long pass forward that found Scott Gammons, who finished for his first goal of the season.
Jefferson answered to level the match, but the Spartans regained the advantage shortly before halftime. Steedman found the back of the net with a header off an assist from Matthew Twigg, sending Cayuga into the break with a one-goal lead.
The Spartans created several opportunities early in the second half but could not extend their advantage. Jefferson eventually capitalized, tying the match with 25 minutes remaining in regulation and setting up a tense finish.
Cayuga regained control with 15 minutes left when sophomore Anakin Doosi converted a chance created by Finley Keating to put the Spartans back in front.
The lead grew four minutes later when Twigg scored the final goal of the afternoon, with Joshua Murray providing the assist.
After Jefferson twice erased Cayuga’s lead, the Spartans finally found a way to put the match away with their two late goals. The victory marked an important turnaround after Cayuga entered the contest still searching for its first win of the campaign.
Cayuga will look to build on the victory Saturday, September 5, when it returns home to face Jamestown Community College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
