A Canandaigua woman suffered severe injuries Wednesday afternoon after police said her dog attacked her and later charged at officers responding to the scene.
The Canandaigua Police Department said officers were called to Chapin Street around 2:29 p.m. after reports of a woman screaming. When officers arrived, they found a 50-year-old Canandaigua resident in a backyard with serious injuries to her left arm while attempting to restrain a pit bull.
Police said officers tried to help restrain the dog, but the animal lunged at them. An officer deployed a Taser, though the dog reportedly broke free and charged at another officer, prompting the officer to fire one shot from a service weapon, killing the dog at the scene.
After the shooting, an officer applied a tourniquet to the woman’s arm before she was transported by Canandaigua Emergency Medical Services to F.F. Thompson Hospital with severe injuries to both arms.
Investigators said the attack appeared to begin when the dog was actively attacking another dog at the residence and the owner attempted to intervene. The second dog was taken by the Ontario County Humane Society to a veterinary clinic for emergency treatment.
Police said investigators are now looking into the history and origins of the dog. Authorities believe it may be the same dog involved in a March 20, 2024 incident in which the animal attacked and injured its owner before being subdued with a Taser by police.
The investigation remains ongoing.
