NYSEG and RG&E pushing to move more gas meters outdoors

New York State Electric & Gas and Rochester Gas and Electric are accelerating efforts to move thousands of natural gas meters from inside homes and businesses to outdoor locations, arguing the change will improve safety, emergency response times, and customer service across New York.

The utilities announced Wednesday that the initiative is part of a broader push to modernize gas infrastructure and reduce the need for in-home service visits while making meters easier to access during emergencies and routine maintenance work.

“Relocating gas meters outdoors is one of the most effective ways we can improve safety for our customers and our communities,” said Tom Scappaticci, vice president of gas engineering and operations for both utilities.

According to the companies, roughly 35% of RG&E gas meters and 18% of NYSEG gas meters are still located indoors, reflecting older system designs that were common decades ago.

Utility officials said outdoor placement allows crews and first responders to access meters more quickly during emergencies and reduces delays caused by inaccessible basements or interior utility rooms. The companies also said exterior meters make inspections and maintenance easier to complete with less disruption to customers.

NYSEG and RG&E said they plan to coordinate directly with property owners before any work begins and claimed most relocations can be completed with little interruption to service.

The announcement comes as both utilities continue broader infrastructure modernization efforts throughout upstate New York, including grid upgrades and ongoing gas system maintenance projects.

Customers interested in relocating their gas meter or seeking additional information are being directed to contact their utility provider directly.
