Cayuga baseball splits doubleheader with Jefferson

Cayuga Community College earned a split against Jefferson Community College on Sunday, rolling to a 15-6 victory in Game 1 before falling 7-6 in the nightcap to close out Region III East Division play. The Spartans finish the division schedule 30-18 overall and 20-8 in the East Division.

Cayuga wasted no time seizing control in the opener, erupting for four runs in the first inning behind a solo home run from Chase Mascelli. The offense stayed hot with four more runs in the second, highlighted by Eathen Yoon’s two-run blast, before a seven-run fourth inning broke the game wide open. Tyler Black, Tristan Sierra and Emilio Turco each delivered RBI hits during the surge.

Yoon powered the lineup with five RBI, while Black and Sierra added multi-hit performances. Black, Yoon and Recio each crossed the plate three times. On the mound, Jack Walters delivered a complete-game effort, allowing six runs while striking out three to secure the win.

The Spartans jumped ahead early again in Game 2 when Ross led off with his first home run of the season. Cayuga kept pace early and tied the game in the second on a bases-loaded walk by Lewis Huang, but Jefferson built a four-run cushion midway through the contest.

Cayuga mounted a late push, sparked by Yoon’s second homer of the day to open the fifth inning. Huang followed with a two-run single to cut the deficit to one, but the comeback fell short. Huang finished with three RBI, while Sierra and Joshua Lightburn combined for five hits. James MacLean allowed one run over three innings of relief.

Cayuga returns to action Monday, May 4, for a road doubleheader at Finger Lakes Community College, with first pitch set for 3 p.m.
