Meteorologist Glenn Johnson, seen for decades on TV across the Finger Lakes to retire

After more than four decades forecasting Western New York’s ever-changing weather, a familiar face on Rochester television is preparing to sign off.

Meteorologist Glenn Johnson announced he will retire from broadcasting, with his final day on air at WHEC-TV set for June 24.

Johnson said the decision comes after 41 years in the field, reflecting on a career that spanned major advances in meteorology and decades of connecting with viewers across the region. He thanked colleagues and audiences, calling it a privilege to share his passion for weather.

A Long Island native, Johnson began his career in Rochester as an intern at WHAM-TV in the mid-1980s while attending SUNY Brockport. He went on to spend 36 years at the station, eventually becoming chief meteorologist, before joining WHEC-TV in 2021.

Beyond his on-air work, Johnson was known for his community involvement, including teaching meteorology courses at Monroe Community College and visiting schools to share his enthusiasm for weather with students.

Johnson said the profession kept him grounded throughout his career, crediting mentors and colleagues while noting that forecasting is a field where learning never stops.

His retirement marks the end of a long run for one of the region’s most recognizable weather voices.
