New York Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton is headed to the 10-day injured list after an MRI revealed a low-grade strain in his right calf, manager Aaron Boone said Monday. Stanton felt tightness while running the bases during Friday’s series opener in Houston and sat out the next three games, including New York’s 4-2 win over Texas.
Boone described the injury as relatively minor but significant enough to sideline the five-time All-Star rather than risk further damage. While Stanton could return when first eligible, the club is not committing to a firm timetable.
To fill the roster spot, the Yankees promoted top prospect Jasson Domínguez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The switch-hitting outfielder went 1-for-4 with a strikeout while serving as designated hitter in his season debut Monday.
The move comes amid additional roster adjustments. Right-hander Luis Gil was optioned to Triple-A following Sunday’s loss to Houston, dropping to 1-2 with a 6.05 ERA across four starts.
Stanton, 35, has hit .256 with three home runs and 14 RBIs in 24 games this season.
Injuries have frequently interrupted his tenure in New York, as he has not completed a full season since 2018. He has previously missed time with ailments including elbow issues, multiple hamstring strains, a quadriceps injury, and lower-leg concerns.
