Inmate attack at Marcy prison injures officers, teacher

A violent incident inside a Central New York correctional facility left multiple officers and a civilian teacher injured after an inmate broke free from restraints and launched an attack.

The confrontation happened April 21 at Marcy Correctional Facility when officers were escorting a 42-year-old inmate back to his cell. Despite being handcuffed, the inmate managed to slip one hand free before turning and repeatedly striking a nearby teacher in the head and face.

Officials said the inmate also attempted to grab the teacher by the neck as officers rushed to intervene. During the struggle, the inmate punched one officer in the face and continued resisting efforts to restrain him, even after being sprayed twice with OC spray.

Additional staff responded, and a fourth officer was able to gain control by securing the inmate’s legs. The inmate was eventually forced against a wall and brought under control before being re-handcuffed and escorted for decontamination.

Several staff members were injured during the incident. One officer suffered cuts to his forearm and elbow along with swelling to his jaw and face and was taken to a local hospital. Three other officers reported back and hip injuries, with one also transported for further treatment. The teacher sustained abrasions and swelling to the head and face and was also hospitalized.

The inmate, who is serving a nine-year sentence for attempted first-degree assault following a 2024 conviction in Albany County, was placed in a Special Housing Unit after the attack.

A union official representing correctional officers said the incident highlights growing concerns about inmate violence and questioned whether current disciplinary measures are sufficient.
