Steady rain didn’t keep residents away Saturday as dozens turned out in Canandaigua to safely dispose of unused medications during a national drug takeback effort.
The Canandaigua Police Department hosted a curbside collection event April 25 in partnership with Ontario County Back the Blue as part of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Drug Take Back Day.
Officials said approximately 55 vehicles stopped by throughout the day, resulting in the collection of about 200 pounds of pharmaceutical waste for proper disposal.
Despite challenging weather conditions, organizers described the event as a success, pointing to strong community participation and the volume of medications removed from circulation.
Police also recognized several law enforcement recruits who assisted with the effort, including Officer Moyer and Officer Poerio from the Finger Lakes Law Enforcement Academy, as well as Officer Thompson and Officer Maslyn from the Broome County Sheriff’s Law Enforcement Academy.
Drug takeback events are designed to provide a safe and convenient way for residents to dispose of unused or expired medications, helping to reduce the risk of misuse, accidental poisoning, and environmental contamination.
