Overflowing trash, human waste, and safety failures have landed a troubled Asteri Ithaca building with a hefty penalty, according to The Ithaca Voice.
County health officials fined the building’s owner $40,000 after inspectors found it failed to follow a mandated cleanup and security plan. Reports described garbage piled high, along with feces, urine, and even blood in stairwells.
The building, which houses vulnerable residents including people exiting homelessness, already faced scrutiny after fire risks forced a temporary evacuation. Officials warn more daily fines could follow if conditions don’t improve.
