Two brand-new electric school buses broke down before ever hitting the road in Canandaigua, dealing a setback to the district’s clean energy push, according to the Finger Lakes Times.
School officials say one bus wouldn’t hold a charge and the other suffered a component failure, forcing both to be sent back to the manufacturer within weeks of delivery. Voters approved nearly $1 million for the buses last year as part of a shift away from fossil fuels.
The breakdown comes as New York pushes districts to go fully electric by 2035. Officials now hope repaired or replacement buses arrive before the school year ends.
