State launches accessibility initiative for parks with $10.8M investment

New York is rolling out a new push to make its parks and природ spaces more accessible, backed by more than $10 million in funding aimed at breaking down barriers for people with disabilities.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Monday announced the launch of the “These Lands Are for Everyone” initiative, a statewide effort to expand access to outdoor recreation and environmental education.

The program begins with $10.8 million in projects in Western New York, funded through the state’s Environmental Bond Act, with a focus on creating more inclusive and sensory-friendly experiences across public lands.

State officials said the initiative will support features such as accessible trails, tactile exhibits, and nature centers designed to accommodate people with mobility challenges and neurodiverse visitors.

The largest share of funding — $7 million — will go toward expanding the Reinstein Woods Environmental Education Center. The project will more than double the facility’s size and include new features such as accessibility equipment, including trail wheelchairs, motorized scooters and sensory tools. The expanded center is also being designed as a high-efficiency “living building” aimed at reducing long-term operating costs.

Another $3.8 million will support improvements at Zoar Valley, where a new Memorial Trail will provide a fully accessible route along the gorge rim. The project includes benches, parking, and educational signage, as well as upgrades to improve safety and access for both visitors and emergency responders.

Officials said the investments are part of a broader effort to ensure public lands are welcoming to all residents, regardless of ability, while also promoting environmental education and long-term conservation.

The initiative builds on existing state programs aimed at expanding access to outdoor recreation, including accessible maps, specialized permits and accommodations for people with disabilities.
