Teacher charged after closet abuse claims

Police arrested a special education teacher after allegations she isolated a nonverbal child in a dark closet and poked her with toothpicks, according to the Times Union. Karrie Haverstock, 60, now faces child endangerment charges tied to incidents reported by parents.

Investigators say one child was left alone in the dark for minutes, while another family reported similar treatment. The arrest comes as the Salmon River district already faces scrutiny over controversial “timeout boxes” used to confine students.

Officials say this criminal case is separate from the box investigation, which remains ongoing. The district placed Haverstock on leave in December, and she’s due in court later this month.
