Push grows for transparency laws

Advocates are ramping up pressure to expose government secrecy in New York, pushing new transparency laws during Sunshine Week, according to Spectrum News 1. Watchdog groups say the state’s Freedom of Information Law is too weak and needs stronger enforcement.

Lawmakers are weighing several proposals, including one that would track how agencies handle public records requests and another that sets stricter deadlines for responses.

Some efforts face hurdles after Gov. Kathy Hochul vetoed a prior bill over concerns about unrealistic timelines. Still, supporters hope revised versions — plus measures on legal fees and exemptions — can win approval this session.
