New Yorkers could face stricter voting rules, including proof of citizenship and photo ID, if a Republican-backed federal bill advances, according to the Ithaca Journal. The SAVE America Act would require documents like a passport or birth certificate to register, effectively ending online and mail registration.
The proposal would also limit mail voting and require ID at the polls. Supporters say it protects elections, while critics argue it would block eligible voters and roll back years of expanded access.
The GOP-led House already passed the bill, but it faces steep odds in the Senate. If approved, officials warn it could affect hundreds of thousands of voter registrations across New York.
