The Buffalo Sabres continued their surge with a 5-0 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Thursday night at SAP Center, improving to 43-20-6 and moving into a tie for first place in the Eastern Conference with 92 points.
Buffalo has now gone 11-1-0 since the Olympic break and owns an NHL-best 32-6-2 record since December 9. The win also extended the Sabres’ franchise-record road point streak to 12 games (11-0-1).
Alex Lyon made 23 saves to earn the shutout, his 10th straight road win, becoming just the fifth goaltender in NHL history to reach that mark. He followed Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen’s shutout in the previous game, continuing a strong rotation in net.
After a scoreless first period, the Sabres broke the game open in the second with three goals in a span of 1:43. Noah Ostlund started the surge, followed by Sam Carrick and Rasmus Dahlin, giving Buffalo a 3-0 lead.
Tage Thompson extended the advantage early in the third period with his 35th goal of the season. Carrick capped the scoring later in the period with his second of the night, with Logan Stanley recording his second assist of the game.
Alex Tuch returned to the lineup after missing the previous game due to illness.
The Sabres continue their road trip Saturday against the Los Angeles Kings. Puck drop is scheduled for 4 p.m.
