A major tax break for an Ithaca housing complex is now in jeopardy after safety failures forced residents out, according to The Ithaca Voice. Officials deemed Asteri unsafe earlier this month, citing serious fire code issues.
The property’s owner, Vecino Group, must fix the problems or risk losing part of its tax deal, which has already saved over $2.1 million. A key fire safety test is set for March 20.
If the building still fails, the company has until April 4 to comply. Leaders say the tax incentive depends on providing safe, livable housing — not just development.
