Climate law fight heads to budget

Lawmakers are still waiting on Gov. Kathy Hochul’s plan to rewrite New York’s climate law, but many expect she’ll get her way, according to Spectrum News 1. Her push aims to delay deadlines and change emissions rules to prevent future spikes in utility bills.

Some Democrats who once resisted now signal they’re open to compromise, though they want details fast. Proposals could shift emissions benchmarks, extend timelines, and tweak how progress gets measured.

Environmental advocates strongly oppose the changes, warning delays could increase reliance on fossil fuels. Still, leaders say the final state budget will likely include some version of Hochul’s plan.
