Police in Canandaigua are reminding residents that riding bicycles, skateboards, and scooters on sidewalks is prohibited in the city’s downtown business district.
The notice comes as warmer weather brings increased pedestrian traffic and more riders into the area.
Officials said riding on sidewalks in the downtown district creates safety hazards, including the risk of collisions with pedestrians.
City code prohibits operating bicycles, skateboards, or scooters on sidewalks within the defined downtown area, except for law enforcement performing their duties.
Police said devices used in violation of the law may be seized for at least 48 hours, with additional requirements for release if the owner is a minor.
Violations can result in fines up to $250, up to 15 days in jail, or both, with each day considered a separate offense.
