Corning woman faces felony charges after meth, assault-style rifle found

A Corning woman faces multiple felony charges after state police said a traffic stop in Steuben County led to the discovery of methamphetamine and an assault-style rifle.

Kellie Kelley, 40, of Corning, was arrested March 5 following a traffic stop in the town of Avoca.

New York State Police said troopers from SP Bath observed a 2015 Chevrolet Impala crossing the center line several times around 1:47 a.m. on County Route 105 and initiated a traffic stop.

During the stop, investigators said the driver initially gave a false name and could not properly identify herself. Troopers later found identification inside the vehicle and determined the driver was Kelley.

Police also discovered Kelley’s driver’s license was suspended and that she had multiple outstanding warrants from the Corning Police Department, the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office and State Police in Painted Post.

During an inventory of the vehicle before it was towed, troopers found about 30 grams of methamphetamine, additional quantities of the drug, a .223 caliber semi-automatic assault-style rifle, two large-capacity ammunition feeding devices and ammunition.

Police said Kelley later surrendered additional methamphetamine that had been concealed on her person while being processed.

She was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree with intent to sell, criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree for possessing an assault weapon and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon for large-capacity ammunition devices.

Additional charges include tampering with physical evidence, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the third degree and multiple vehicle and traffic violations.

Kelley was taken to the Steuben County Jail for centralized arraignment. Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing.
