Auburn schools reopen after threat investigated

Auburn schools reopened March 5 after authorities determined a reported threat tied to Cayuga Community College was unfounded.

The Auburn Enlarged City School District closed schools March 4 after officials learned of a potential safety concern and asked law enforcement to review the situation.

Police later said detectives investigated a report of a possible threat involving the college’s Auburn campus.

According to Auburn police, an Auburn resident speaking with a friend in Rochester believed a third party mentioned during the conversation had made a threat toward the campus.

Investigators determined the Auburn resident was in personal crisis at the time and that the perceived threat was unfounded. Detectives also determined the alleged third-party suspect did not exist.

Police said they are confident there is no credible threat to Cayuga Community College or any school in the city of Auburn.

District officials said law enforcement has completed its review and the matter is now considered closed. Schools and activities resumed on their normal schedule Thursday.
