State climate mandates could add thousands of dollars to household energy bills, according to an analysis cited by Assemblyman Jeff Gallahan.
Gallahan, R,C-Manchester, said Feb. 27 that findings from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority show compliance with the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act could increase household energy costs by $2,000 to $4,000 or more in the coming years.
Gallahan said comments from Gov. Kathy Hochul’s budget director also confirm rising costs tied to the law’s mandates.
“The state’s own agencies are now acknowledging what hundreds of my constituents have been telling me for years: Albany Democrats’ Green New Scam is driving up energy costs and forcing families to pay thousands of dollars they can’t afford,” Gallahan said.
He said seniors on fixed incomes and small business owners have raised concerns about higher utility bills and the cost of energy retrofits.
Gallahan called on lawmakers to repeal or reform the CLCPA. He urged a shift to what he described as an energy framework focused on affordability, reliability and consumer choice.
“It’s time for Albany Democrats to stop digging in their heels and join Republicans in repealing this nonsense before families are buried further under the cost-of-living crisis,” Gallahan said. “We need real relief, not more burdensome mandates.”
The Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act sets statewide climate and energy requirements.
