State Police have arrested a Campbell man accused of attempting to extort a Bath resident through a social media scheme.
Andrew Kidder, 24, was taken into custody March 17 following an investigation by State Police in Bath.
Investigators said the case began Feb. 6 when a Bath resident reported being targeted on a social media dating app.
According to police, the suspect allegedly threatened to release sensitive personal information unless the victim provided cash and other items.
Authorities said the investigation, which included digital evidence analysis and subpoenas to social media platforms, identified Kidder as the person behind the fraudulent accounts.
Kidder was charged with attempted grand larceny in the third degree as a hate crime, a class D felony.
He was processed at State Police in Bath and transported to the Steuben County Jail for centralized arraignment.
