More than 40 projects along New York’s canal system will receive state funding this year to boost tourism and improve accessibility.
The New York State Canal Corporation and the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor announced Thursday that 41 nonprofits and municipalities will share $207,953 in 2026 Canal System Tourism Infrastructure and Event Grants.
The awards will support 11 infrastructure and amenity projects and 31 events along canal waterways and the Canalway Trail. Grants range from $500 to $24,000 and are expected to leverage an additional $808,104 in local and partner support.
Officials said infrastructure funds will cover accessibility updates, trail enhancements, restroom renovations and interpretive signage. Event grants will support festivals, community celebrations and recreational activities throughout the canal corridor.
“As we begin our third century of operation, ensuring that New York’s canals can be enjoyed by everyone is a top priority,” Canal Corporation Director Ben Walsh said.
Bob Radliff, executive director of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, said the projects help make the canal system more welcoming and strengthen heritage tourism.
The grant program is now in its fifth year. Organizers said it has invested about $1 million in improvements and events since launching.
A full list of recipients was released with the announcement.
