A long-simmering rivalry just resurfaced in New York politics, as former Gov. Eliot Spitzer poured $18,000 into Drew Warshaw’s bid for state comptroller, according to the Times Union.
Spitzer’s donation marks his largest in years and boosts Warshaw’s $1.7 million campaign to unseat Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli in a Democratic primary. Warshaw, a former Spitzer staffer and nonprofit housing executive, has criticized DiNapoli’s handling of the $291 billion pension fund and the state’s cost of living.
DiNapoli, who secured the party’s nomination at the state convention, has raised over $1 million and drawn strong union support. The primary sets up a rare competitive challenge for the longtime incumbent.
