Syracuse men’s basketball (15-12, 6-8 ACC) returns home today at 1 p.m. to host No. 16/20 North Carolina Tar Heels (20-6, 8-5 ACC) at the JMA Wireless Dome, marking the Orange’s fourth matchup against a ranked opponent in their last six games.
The teams last met earlier this month in Chapel Hill, where North Carolina held off a late Syracuse rally for an 87-77 victory. The Tar Heels hold a 19-7 advantage in the all-time series, though three of the Orange’s wins in the rivalry have come inside the Dome.
Syracuse enters following a challenging stretch that included road games against ranked Virginia and Duke after back-to-back home wins over California and SMU. The Orange continue to rely on their defensive presence, ranking second nationally in blocked shots per game. Senior William Kyle III anchors the effort and ranks among Division I leaders in total blocks, while also serving as Syracuse’s top rebounder.
Offensively, sophomore Donnie Freeman remains a consistent scoring option and posted 23 points in the previous meeting with North Carolina. Senior Nate Kingz has connected on a 3-pointer in 16 consecutive games, and junior Naithan George recently reached 500 career assists while shooting efficiently over the past several contests.
North Carolina enters after an 82-58 loss at NC State and has dealt with injuries to key frontcourt contributors in recent games. The Tar Heels, who opened the season by winning 13 of their first 14 contests, are led by senior guard Seth Trimble.
This game will also feature a halftime ceremony honoring Syracuse greats Rudy Hackett and Jim Lee, members of the program’s 1975 Final Four team.
