A former industrial building in Seneca Falls that once faced demolition is now being recognized statewide as a model for historic preservation and affordable housing.
State officials announced that the Huntington Apartments project in Seneca Falls is among 10 recipients of the 2026 New York State Historic Preservation Awards, highlighting efforts that restore historic sites while meeting modern community needs.
The project, developed by Home Leasing in partnership with Eagle Star Housing, transformed a long-vacant structure into 53 affordable apartments, including 27 units with supportive services for veterans. The building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, previously housed a range of uses over decades, including manufacturing and automotive businesses, before falling into disrepair.
The redevelopment was backed by roughly $24 million in public and private funding, including state and federal low-income housing tax credits, Downtown Revitalization Initiative funding, energy-efficiency support, and historic preservation tax credits.
State officials said the awards recognize projects that demonstrate how preservation can drive community revitalization, expand access to housing, and create more sustainable spaces.
The Huntington Apartments project stood out for combining historic rehabilitation with modern housing needs, preserving a key piece of Seneca Falls’ industrial past while addressing demand for affordable and supportive housing.
The annual awards, presented by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, have recognized preservation efforts across the state since 1980.
