Two Steuben County school districts just took the first step toward a possible merger, according to the Corning Leader.
The school boards for Campbell-Savona and Bradford approved a feasibility study to weigh academic programs, staffing, transportation, facilities and taxes. Leaders say shrinking state aid has forced tough budget decisions and rising tax levies in both districts.
New York offers a major incentive: a 40% boost in state aid for the first five years after a merger, with funding tapering off over 14 years. Campbell-Savona serves about 750 students, while Bradford enrolls roughly 230.
Any merger would require approval from both boards and voters in each district.
