Protecting water quality and preserving the character of Keuka Lake will remain front and center in 2026, according to the Keuka Lake Association.
The Penn Yan-based organization announced a slate of initiatives focused on monitoring, education, and collaboration aimed at keeping the lake healthy for residents, visitors, and wildlife.
Among the priorities for the coming year is expanded water quality sampling. The association plans to test streams and tributaries feeding the lake in addition to the routine lake testing it has conducted for more than 30 years.
The group will also expand monitoring of harmful algal blooms and foam streaks across the lake. Volunteers will continue efforts to remove invasive water chestnuts from the Keuka Outlet marsh and Sugar Creek in Branchport.
The association said it will keep working with partner organizations to track lake levels and septic system inspections. It will also broaden its work with the Finger Lakes Regional Watershed Alliance to promote Lake Friendly Living practices.
Other initiatives include working with local sheriff’s departments to share information about boating laws, speed limits, and safe boating certificate requirements. The group also plans to offer educational programs throughout the year on the “State of the Lake” for both adults and children.
The association said it also aims to strengthen connections between visitors and local businesses while raising awareness of its mission.
“The KLA Board, its membership and numerous volunteers devote countless hours and cooperate with multiple organizations across the watershed and beyond,” said KLA President Rob Dintruff. “We cannot do this important work without their help.”
Founded in 1956, the Keuka Lake Association has about 1,500 members and represents property owners, residents, recreational users, and businesses throughout the watershed. Its work focuses on lake level control, water quality, land use, recreation, and conservation.
